This has been a long time coming, and probably should have come a lot sooner. Over the last couple of years we have been singing a song at our gatherings called “Worthy”. Many of you have either asked or figured it out on your own, but it’s time to come clean and officially admit that this is a song that Brett and I wrote together.
It was several years ago now. Brett was down in California and I was working at another church here in Calgary. I had been working on a song idea but wasn’t quite sure where to take it, so I called up my good buddy Brett and said, “hey! Wanna write a song with me?” I instant messaged him a quick little recording of what I had so far and throughout the next couple of hours we sent music, melodies, and lyrics back and forth to each other until we had this song. It was very exciting and really fun!
The song itself started as a response to the words from Psalm 83:1, “O God do not keep silence…”. I was struck by the boldness of the Psalmist calling God to action, and reflected my own desire to hear His voice (I had recently had a little mini-revival to the power and beauty of His Word, and wanted more!). It was in that desire to hear Him and to drown my parched soul in the spring of his Word that led to the confession of Psalm 84:10, “For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” That we would be so desperate for God that even just standing at the door of his tent peeking in would be enough; that was our prayer. But the reality is that God doesn’t just leave us at the door. In Christ we are adopted heirs, brought into His presence and seated with Christ (Ephesians 1:5, 2:6), and from there we get to sing, with all of creation and all the saints, “Worthy is the Lamb!” (Revelation 5:12).
The bridge of the song is an adaptation of the “song of heaven” from Revelation 4 and 5, as it seemed appropriate to not just talk about singing “heaven’s song”, but for us, with one voice as the people of God, to actually sing “heaven’s song”.
It has been a joy and an honour to share this song with you over the last number of years, and so incredibly humbling to hear the stories of how it has been a blessing and vehicle of praise for you.
Oh, Lord you are good
And worthy of praise
Your words are water for my dry soul
Do not be quiet
Do not be silent
My heart is calling out for you
And it would be enough
To stand by your door
Knowing you were there
But you take me by the hand
And lead me to your throne
Where I can…
Stand with you
So loved by you
And sing, “Worthy is the Lamb”
And with one voice
We’ll join in heaven’s song
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb
Blessing and honour and glory
To Jesus, our redeemer
Praise, adoration, and power
to you, our deliverer
